Forgiveness is medicine like no other… for the giver.
The best it can do for the receiver is open a door that may have been closed. Ultimately, we all must choose to walk through that door on our own.
Until we choose forgiveness, despite how justified we are in our resentment and anger, we will remain entangled in the drama and karmic burden of the lesson or relationship.
Forgiveness is the gateway to Grace. When we open to that current of edgeless mercy, of unfeasible softness, we reconcile ourselves to the World.
Forgiveness cannot be rushed or performed. It can only arise authentically when we make peace with the fact that the other person (or oneself) could not have done anything different than they did, despite what our imagination might say.
And that was their best on that day, with the resources they had available to them.
And that whatever portion of suffering they poured out is but a glimpse of what churns inside of them.
Have Mercy. Soften the belly. Let the anger turn to grief. Tend the grieving heart with gentleness. And let the grief wash away the hard and righteous stance of the victim, waiting for someone else to make things right.
The path to true freedom winds, again and again, through Forgiveness.
